Hakonechloa is a genus in the grass family, Poaceae, with only one species native to Japan. It is shade tolerant and many garden varieties are in cultivation.

Division in spring
Medium sized ornamental grass that grows best in partial shade in humus-rich, well-drained, moist soil. It's best to prune withered foliage in early spring berfore new growth emerges. It's advisable to cover with leaves or mulch in fall.
