AUTUMN ONIONS

Spring flowering bulbs are plants that form bulbs or corms which are planted in the fall. They bloom in most cases in early spring, although a few species flower in autumn.  The rule of thumb when planting bulbs is to plant them at a depth of about 3x the height of the bulb. A 5 cm bulb is planted 15 cm deep.

Camassia is a genus of 4 species in the Asperigaceae family which are all native to NW-America. The bulbs of Camassia quamash were an important food source for indigenous people in the area.

Chionodoxa is a genus of 6 species in the family Asparagaceae, native to mountain areas of the eastern Mediterranean region.

Colchicum - Naked ladies

Colchicum is a genus in the family Colchicaceae, which includes around 160 species of perennial plants native to western Asia, Europe and south along the east coast of Africa. They are highly toxic as many species contain the alkaloid colchicin which has been used to treat gout.  The defining characteristic of the genus is that the ovary is underground and often the flowers emerge in autumn while the leaves grow in spring.

Fritillaria is a genus of around 120 species in the lily family, Liliaceae. The genus has a wide distribution around the northern hemisphere.

Gladiolus 

Gladiolus is a genus of around 150 species in the iris family,  Iridaceae. Most species are native to S-Africa, but a few grow wild in S-Europe and Asia. Most gladiolus grown in gardens are hybrids, grown as spring bulbs here, i.e. corms are planted in pots in spring and grown inside until planting out in summer. There are some species that are very nice garden plants, among them G. imbricatus which is perennial here.

Hyacinthoides - Blue bells

Hyacinthoides is a genus of  11 species in the family, Asparagaceae. All are native to the Mediterranian, except one (H. non-scripta), which is widespread in W-Europe.

Hyacinthus is a small genus in the Asparagaceae family. All species of the genus are native to the eastern Mediterranean.

Iris

ris, is a large genus in the iris family, Iridaceae, with close to 300 species wide spread around the northern hemisphere. The genus is divided into two sections, plants that grow from rhizomes and plants that grow from bulbs. The rhizomatous iris are covered in the perennial section of this website.  The  bulbous iris grow in dry climates like many other spring flowering bulbs and go dormant during the hottest summer months.

Narcissus - Daffodils

Narcissus is a genus of roughly 50 species in the amaryllis family, Amaryllidaceae, native to SW-Europe and N-Africa, with the greatest diversity on the Iberia peninsula. The flowers are uniquely shaped, with six tepals and a cup- or trumpet shaped corolla. A great number of garden hybrids are grown in gardens, which are classified in groups according to the shape of the corolla.
